Norman A. Enhorning

Dr. Norman A. Enhorning, age 80, passed away on Saturday, September 23, 2017 peacefully at home. 

He was born on September 24, 1936 in Waterbury, CT, the son of the late Arthur and Doris Enhorning.

Norman graduated from Crosby High School, class of 1954.  Norman married the love of his life Mary O’Donnell in December of 1966 and he was a loving husband and friend, loving father of Christine Laing and he especially loved his cats, Dusty, Sheba, Kinka and Orpheus.  He continued his education attending the University of Connecticut earning his B.A in 1958 (Phi Bata Kappa), then he continued on earning his M.A in 1959.  After taking a short break he went back to Rutgers University and earned his Ph.D. in History in 1970.  Norman had a passion for education and educating students.  He taught history at Wappingers High School from 1959 to 1962 and then he taught history at SUNY Adirondack College from 1964 to 2003 when he retired as a distinguished professor of History.  He was chosen twice as the Teacher of the year.  Norman continued to offer his help to his students by teaching part time up until 2013 at SUNY Adirondack. 

Norman was also the President of the Washington County Historical Society for four years; President of the Warren County Historical Society for four years; he published an article in the Washington County Historical Society Journal; and he published two chapters in the History of Warren County.    

He was a devout Christian serving as a Deacon and Elder at the First Presbytarian Church of Glens Falls.  He was also a lifetime fan of the New York Yankees; his favorite Baseball player was Johnny Mize.  He was a longtime member of the ACLU and NAACP. 

He admired most presidents, but he especially admired President Jefferson, President Lincoln, and President Franklin Roosevelt.  He also enjoyed Opera, Laurence Melchior and Kingten Flgstad. 

Norman is survived by his loving wife for 50 years, Mary O’Donnell Enhorning; daughter, Christine Laing (Christopher), several in-laws, nephews and a cousin.  

He is preceded in death by his parents and sister Violet Carlson.   

Family and friends may call from 4 pm to 7 pm on Wednesday, September 27, 2017 at the Singleton Sullivan Potter Funeral Home, 407 Bay Road, Queensbury, NY 12804. 

There will be a private graveside service held on Thursday, September 28, 2017. 

A Celebration of life will be held at 11 am on Friday, September 29, 2017 at the First Presbyterian Church, 400 Glen Street, Glens Falls, NY.

In lieu of flowers contributions may be sent to: the First Presbyterian Church of Glens Falls, 400 Glen Street, Glens Falls or to your local SPCA.
