Yvonne Salaun Obituary

Yvonne Salaun, 97, of Halfmoon, NY, passed away peacefully on Friday, July 12, 2024.

Yvonne was born on April 30, 1927, to Amedée Carn and Marie-Jeanne Hammond in Porspoder, Brittany, a small farming town in northwestern France. Yvonne was a resilient woman, who lived through the German occupation of France during WWII. Yvonne married Adolphe Salaun on July 24, 1947 and after World War II, she and her husband immigrated to the United States and settled in Haverstraw, New York. Yvonne was trained as a master seamstress.

Yvonne and Adolphe soon realized their American Dream by building their home in Congers, New York, where they remained for most of their lives. While in Congers, she and her husband raised their daughter and helped to care for their three precious granddaughters. Yvonne spent many years employed as a dental office manager, and during this time, spent many vacations in Jamestown, Rhode Island, where she and Adolphe later retired. She would often express that Jamestown, RI reminded her of her hometown in Brittany, France.

Lovingly known by her family and close friends as “Nain-Nain”, she enjoyed cooking for her friends and family, spending time gardening, and walking along the pebble-covered beaches in front of her home. Her swordfish dinner was legendary, amongst those fortunate enough to experience her flair for French cuisine. In her retirement, she was an active member of L’Alliance Française de Newport, as a volunteer for their social events.

Yvonne is survived by her daughter Marie-France Broadley (Bruce), sister Jeanne Trèbaul, granddaughters, Brigitte Feldman (James), Marissa Broadley, Gabrielle Fernandez (Luis), four great-grandchildren Nicolas, Lucas, Olivia and Landon, as well as many nieces and nephews in France. Yvonne was preceded in death by her beloved husband Adolphe Salaun, and her sister Marie-Thérèse LeGall.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

The family requests donations be made to: L’ Alliance Française de Newport, P.O. Box 361, Newport, RI 02840 in Yvonne’s name.
