Velma F. Edmiston, internationally celebrated under her stage name April March, passed away peacefully on Monday, September 15, 2025, leaving behind a remarkable legacy as one of Burlesque’s most iconic performers.
She was born on June 18, 1935, in Oklahoma City, OK, the daughter of the late Clarence Worden and Fern Gragg.
Affectionately known as the First Lady of Burlesque, Velma was admired worldwide for her sophistication, grace, and artistry. Her elegant burlesque performances captivated audiences and inspired generations of entertainers. Beyond the stage, she was respected for her wit, warmth, resilience, and timeless charm. Her career was highlighted by international tours, stage and television appearances, and even a feature in Golf Illustrated.
Outside of the spotlight, Velma was equally dynamic. She was a proud member of the Red Hat Society and a talented golfer, achieving a 7 handicap and competing with great skill and passion on the course.
Velma is survived by her devoted husband, Jeffrey D. Edmiston; her daughter, Cyrese L. Sciandra (Charlie); stepdaughter, Tricia Prater; her sister, Patty Jo Johnson; niece and nephew, Shawn and Kelly Rae Johnson; and her cherished granddaughter, Nicole Cyrese Eventoff (Matt). She will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and countless admirers.
She was predeceased by her parents.
Family and friends are invited to pay their respects on Friday, September 19, 2025, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Compassionate Funeral Care, 402 Maple Ave., Saratoga Springs, NY.
A graveside service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 20, 2025, at Pine View Cemetery, 21 Quaker Road, Queensbury, NY 12804.
