Thomas Van Ness Obituary

Thomas J. Van Ness, age 56, passed away peacefully on Thursday, November 6, 2025, at his home in Fort Edward, surrounded by his loving family.

Born on August 22, 1969, in Glens Falls, NY, he was the son of Leo Van Ness and Margaret Winters.

Thomas worked for many years as a master carpenter with Hill Top Construction in the Glens Falls area. His craftsmanship and dedication to his trade were admired by all who knew him. A hardworking man with a deep love for woodworking, he could often be found creating or repairing something for friends and family, always ready to lend a hand.

Thomas was a proud recovered alcoholic who devoted much of his life to helping others through their own journeys of recovery. He found joy in simple pleasures, especially Halloween, his favorite holiday, and cherished every moment spent with his children and family, whom he loved deeply.

He is survived by his mother, Margaret Van Ness; sons, Thomas Van Ness and Justin Van Ness (Jewels); special family members, stepdaughter, A.J. Van Ness; stepson, Kameron Phelps; brothers, Edward Van Ness (Stella), Arthur Van Ness (Diana), James Van Ness (Judith), Steven Van Ness (Lisa), and Timothy Van Ness; sisters, Margaret Quirk, Linda Dugan, Janet LaFay (Kenneth), Virginia Whiting, Gail Wittmer, and Laurie Havens (Mark); and his beloved grandchild, Wesley Van Ness; previous spouse, Sheri. He is also remembered fondly by many nieces, nephews, and friends who will miss him dearly.

Thomas was predeceased by his father, Leo Van Ness; fiancé, Michele Phelps; brothers, Kenneth Van Ness and Leo Van Ness; sisters, Sharon Jenkins, Lisa Van Ness; brothers-in-law, Dick Quirk, Patrick Dugan, and Fred Whiting.
