Sophie Smith

Sophie Smith, age 98, peacefully passed away on Thursday, April 15, 2021 at her home in Saratoga Springs with her family by her side.

Sophie was the wife of Elmer H. Smith and daughter of the late Frank and Gertrude Knapp Korosec

Sophie emigrated from Slovenia when she was 4 with her mother and siblings to join their father on the farm in Schuyler.  She worked as a Surgical Technician at the Community Hospital in Stamford, NY.  She was proud of being able to care for patients and had great respect for her health care team.  Sophie also took great pleasure in teaching the art of her profession to others. 

Sophie was a faithful member of the St. Clements Church of Saratoga Springs.  She enjoyed gardening, was an excellent cook, and was the nucleus of family gatherings.  Sophie was a devoted wife and mother, and above all, the best grandmother ever.  Sophie was a friend and family member that will always be remembered for her selfless caring, generosity and acceptance of all.

Sophie is survived by her daughter, Barbara Martin (Ken) of Gansevoort and stepson, Chauncey Smith (Jenny) of Harpursville, and grandchildren Jacqueline Nelson, Renee Zennaiter, Gina Smith, Jeffrey Smith, Brett Martin, Trent Martin, Tyler Martin and Kelly Martin.  Sophie was a great-grandmother to eleven great-grandchildren. 

She is predeceased by her parents, husband, and siblings, Jennie McCarthy, Mary Stucin, Anna Kerzick, Elsie Struckle and Frank Korosec and special friend Doreen Smith.

Family and friends may call from 5 pm to 7 pm on Tuesday, April 20, 2021 at Compassionate Funeral Care, 402 Maple Ave., Saratoga Springs, NY 12866

On Wednesday, April 21, 2021 family and friends are invited to call from 10 am to 11 followed by a mass held at 11 am at St Mary's Roman Catholic Church, 39 Walnut St, Oneonta, NY 13820. 

A graveside service will be held at 1 pm after the mass at the Locust Hill Cemetery, Hobart, NY 13788

The above services will be a celebration of Sophie’s life.  And in lieu of flowers the family suggests sending a donation to one of Sophie’s favorite organizations.
