Sharon Smith Obituary

Sharon Victoria Smith, partly named for VE Day (Victory in Europe), AKA ‘my Sharona’ per her youngest, a devoted mother and woman of deep faith, passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 15, 2026, at Saratoga Hospital, surrounded bedside by the love of her family.

She was born on May 7, 1945, in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, the daughter of the late Morris Verge and Phyllis (Whidden) Verge.

Sharon lived a life rooted in faith, and devotion to God and family.  Her love and obedience to God guided every aspect of her life, and she found great comfort and purpose in prayer and service to her family.

Sharon was well read and always up to date on current events.  She enjoyed passionate debates on serious matters and was a deep thinker with unshakeable beliefs. She had a quick wit and a wry sense of humor. She was exceptional at high level Suduko, and other challenging puzzles, as well as a competitive poker player.

She also loved music of many genres and loved playing it loud! She possessed great taste in everything from fashion trends to home décor, landscaping and floral arrangements.  She is especially known for her generous gifts artfully wrapped that were almost too beautiful to open!

Sharon was definitely a ‘foodie’ and loved to cook and bake elaborate meals and desserts and surprise her loved ones, especially when they needed it the most.

She was a prayer warrior and attended daily mass as often as her health condition allowed.

Sharon spent many years being a stay-at-home mother raising her children and teaching and guiding them in the Catholic faith; later working at Mt. McGregor Correctional Facility in the records department until her retirement.

As a long time communicant of St. Clements Church, she participated in parish life as a Sunday School teacher as well as a lector. She was a member of the Dominican prayer group and brought many people to the Catholic faith through her prayers, encouragement and loquacious persuasion.

Above all else, Sharon cherished her role as mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was a steady source of love, wisdom, and encouragement. She touched countless lives and leaves behind a legacy of love & faith that will be carried on through her family.

Sharon is survived by her children, Melanie Eggleston (Shawn), Jeffrey Smith (Kristen), and Gabrielle Stillman (Christopher); 7 grandsons and 6 great grandsons, a sister Gwen Verge and brother Michael Verge (Doris), as well as a niece and nephews.

The family would like to extend their thanks to the EMTs with Moreau Emergency Squad, the wonderful nurses and staff in Saratoga ICU for their exemplary care of Sharon.  Sharon’s family would also like to extend their gratitude to Marie Fehsal her devoted caregiver whose assistance enabled her to remain living independently at home.
