Robert Demetras, age 93, peacefully passed away on Sunday, June 1, 2025 at the Home of the Good Shepherd.
He was born on January 9, 1932 in Saratoga Springs, NY. Robert Demetras was the son of the late Myrtle Emma Nash and James George Demetras. He received his formal education in the Saratoga Springs Public School System.
Robert served in the US Navy from June 1952 through May 1956, serving on the USS T. M. Tucker and the USS Roanoke as a Boatswain’s Mate. Robert was proud of his military service and felt that being in the Navy changed the course of his life. Robert received his medical care within the VA Albany Healthcare System. He was quick to defend the wonderful care he received, especially from the Blue Team at the Samual S. Stratton Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Albany.
Robert worked for Peter Kiewit Construction as a laborer when the Northway, Route 87, was being built in the Saratoga Springs area. He later worked with the Construction and General Laborers Local 190 in Albany helping to construct the buildings of the Empire State Plaza.
Robert was a kind, gentle soul who loved his family and was in turn loved by them. He is survived by his brothers George, Erving and Ronald, his sister Florence Sherman, his brother-in-law Roger E. Sherman, nieces Cheryl Sherman, Kathryn Clark, nephew Roger M. Sherman, and 4 grand nieces and nephews.
Robert lived the end of his life at The Home of The Good Shepherd in Saratoga Springs, NY. He was lovingly cared for by the dedicated staff at 390 and 400 Church Street.
In lieu of flowers, his family suggests memorial donations may be made in his name to a veteran’s organization of your choice or to The Home of the Good Shepard.
A graveside service with military honors will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, June 6, 2025 in Greenridge Cemetery, 17 Green Ridge Pl, Saratoga Springs, NY 12866.
