Robert Ballou

Robert Ballou, beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, veteran, and friend, passed away peacefully on June 20, 2026, surrounded by his loving family.

Robert was born on November 5, 1946 in Schroon Lake, New York, and moved to Ballston Spa at a young age, where he spent much of his life.  After being drafted into the United States Army, Robert proudly served his country during the Vietnam War from 1967 to 1968.  During his service, he earned numerous military honors and decorations including the Purple Heart, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal with Device (1960), Expert Marksmanship Badges for both the M-14 and M-16 Rifles, and two Overseas Service Bars.  Upon returning home, he built a career as an industrial sheet metal fabricator, where his strong work ethic and dedication were evident throughout his career.

Robert was a talented artist who loved to draw and had a special passion for woodworking.  Many of his creations featured his favorite bird, the bald eagle.  He found peace and happiness outdoors, whether fishing with family or spending a quiet afternoon alone by a favorite stream.

One of Robert’s greatest joys was his beloved bird, Alexandrea, who was his faithful companion for more than 20 years.  She was truly his pride and joy, and he loved her deeply.

Robert is survived by his loving daughter, whom he affectionately called “his little girl”, Bobbiejo (Michael) Palmateer of Ballston Spa; his cherished grandchildren, Samantha Palmateer and Jacob Palmateer, both of Ballston Spa; and his precious great-granddaughter, Novalee Rose, who meant the world to him.

He is also survived by his former wife and dear friend, Terri Ballou of Ballston Spa; his stepdaughter, Maureen Johnson of Las Vegas; his step-granddaughter, Frankiee DeGregory of Ballston Spa; his sons, Kris Ballou and Leland Ballou; and his sister, Ruth of Little Falls, NY.

Robert was predeceased by his father, Leland Ballou, and his mother, Viola Ballou.

Robert will be remembered for his strength, resilience, sense of humor, artistic talents, and unwavering love for his family.  Whether sharing stories, spending time outdoors, creating something with his hands, or simply enjoying the company of those he loved, Robert left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him.  He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.  The family would like to say a special thank you to all the staff on Victory Lane “the 9th Floor” for taking such good care of my dad.  He loved you all.

A funeral service will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, July 9, 2026 at Compassionate Funeral Care, 402 Maple Ave., Saratoga Springs, NY 12866. 

Family and friends are invited to pay their respects during calling hours from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. 

Interment with military honors will follow at 1:00 p.m. at Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, 200 Duell Road, Schuylerville, NY 12871 following the service.
