Richard Carlsen Obituary

CAMBRIDGE - Richard Roy Todd Carlsen died unexpectedly on Monday, January 14th, 2019 at his home in Cambridge, NY. He was 49 years old, born in Cambridge, NY on September 27th, 1969.

He is survived by his father, Walter Carlsen; his siblings, Doris (Donald) McKinley and Sheryl (Michael) Burke, his dear friends Alan Dupuis and Tom Mclenithan who were like brothers to him; and his nieces and nephews, Carson and Sage McKinley, Nicole (Webster) Madison, Audrey and Silas Madison, Walter (Jackie) Piekarz, Zachary Piekarz, Mikayla Burke, Garrett Kimblern, Cash, Canyon, and Camden Kimblern. He is predeceased by his mother Claire Desmarais; his step-father Roy Moss; and his beloved dog, Captain.

Richard graduated in 1988 from Cambridge High School and received his degree in archeology from Colorado State University in December of 1997.

Richard was happiest when spending time in the woods and spent many years of his life living off-grid at his self-sustaining cabin outside of Bellvue, Colorado. He hiked many miles of the Appalachian Trail, as well as countless other mountains and trails in the Northeast and Western United States. He was also a skilled carpenter and musician with a love for bluegrass music.

A private memorial will be held for friends and family. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Richard’s memory to the Appalachian Trail Conservancy.
