Karen Herrera

Karen Herrera, age 74, passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 21, 2025, at Saratoga Hospital, surrounded by the love and comfort of her family.

Born on April 1, 1951, in Pueblo, Colorado, Karen was the cherished daughter of the late Rose Marie Martlaro and Josef Matulich, and was lovingly raised by her devoted stepfather, the late Wilfred C. Wangerin and late Rose Marie Martlaro.

From an early age, she carried with her a nurturing spirit, a strong work ethic, and a love for creating joy through simple but meaningful moments.

Karen devoted many years of her life as a talented pastry chef at the Saratoga Reading Room and St. Clement’s Horseshow, where her creativity, precision, and passion for cooking and baking were evident in every item she prepared. She took great pride in her work, and her delicious creations brought happiness to countless people alike. Outside of the kitchen, Karen continued to express her love through baking and cooking for those she cared about, always finding joy in sharing meals and treats made from the heart. She was also an avid reader, cherishing quiet moments spent immersed in a good book.

Above all else, Karen was devoted to her family. She is survived by her loving daughter, Alexandria Gingras and Son in Law Thomas Gingras; her daughter’s father Alex Herrera; her brother, Robert Wangerin (Nancy); and her cherished grandchildren, Harper and Emmett, who were a constant source of pride and joy in her life. She is also fondly remembered by many friends and family whose lives were touched by her kindness, generosity, and tenacious spirit.

Family and friends are invited to gather in remembrance of Karen during calling hours on Friday, January 23, 2026, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Compassionate Funeral Care, 402 Maple Avenue, Saratoga Springs, New York. A funeral service will follow at 1:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

Karen will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew her.
