Juan A. Ríos, age 89, passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 25, 2026, at Saratoga Hospital, surrounded by the love of his family.
Born on October 26, 1936 in Ciales, Puerto Rico, Juan was the son of the late Juan Ríos and Ermenegilda Rivera, and the husband to his loving and devoted late wife, Carmen M. Ríos. He carried with him a deep sense of family, responsibility, and pride in his Boricua roots throughout his life.
Juan retired from many years of service as a Special Delivery Carrier in New York City's Mid-Manhattan, where he was known for his strong work ethic and commitment to providing for his loved ones. As the eldest of six siblings, he embraced the role of leader and provider from a young age, a responsibility he continued to carry with quiet strength and devotion throughout his life. Above all, Juan was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather whose greatest joy came from caring for his family.
In his personal time, Juan found happiness in music-- he loved to sing, play the guitar & güiro, and dance-- often filling the room with warmth and energy. He loved playing games and out-strategizing his opponents, particularly his grandchildren. He also enjoyed trips to the equine racetrack and trying his luck with the lottery-- simple pleasures that brought him joy and excitement. He will be remembered for his lively spirit, his dedication to those he loved, and the many memories he created with family and friends.
Juan is survived by his beloved children-- Carmen Iris & José Moreno, John M. & Evelyn Ríos, Elizabeth Lorenzo & Thomas Gorman, Melvin & Sara Ríos, and María C. Ríos & Timothy James; four of his cherished siblings-- Miguel Angel & Santín Ríos, Carmen M. Molina, Victor M. & Ladis Ríos, and Gladys & Ernesto Román; his 14 grandchildren-- Steven Soto, José A. Moreno, Michael P. Moreno, Miguel A. Ríos, Leticia Y. Ríos Mitchell, Kimberly Whitehead, Damian Lorenzo III, Elaina M. Lorenzo Dahn, Elise L. Soto, Victoria L. Luzinas, Rebecca D. Lorenzo, Melvin Skyler Ríos, Brittany E. James Robischon, and Christopher A. James; his 12 great-grandchildren-- Jordis, Samuel, Brooklyn, Emily, Madison, Lana, Dante, Ella, Lyla, Aria, Antonio, and Gabriel; his sister-in-law, Hilda, & nephews, Edward & Miriam Stanley and Eric & Cathy Stanley, and their boys; his Compaí & closest friend, José Elias Soto, and many extended family members and friends from the Island and across the continental U.S.-- coast to coast, who will miss him deeply.
He was also predeceased by his loving brother, Roberto Ríos.
A graveside service will be held at 12:45 p.m. on Wednesday, April 29, 2026, at Saint Raymond Cemetery, 2600 Lafayette Avenue, Bronx, NY 10465.
