WILTON – Joseph Aloy, age 81, passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 6, 2019 at his home.
He was born on May 18, 1937 in Poughkeepsie, NY, the son of the late Paul Aloy and Mary Verrotti Aloy, owners of Aloy’s Garden Restaurant.
In 1963 Joe married Katherine Holowczak, moved to Red Hook, NY and started his racing stable Echo Brook Farms.
He owned, trained and drove several outstanding standardbred race horses including Scrooge and Echo Brook Phil. Echo Brook Phil went on to finish third in the first Million Dollar Purse of the NY OTB Classic at Monticello Raceway.
In 1977, he and his family moved to Saratoga Springs. Joe owned, and operated Aloy’s Harness & Equipment located on the grounds of Saratoga Harness Track, for 32 years, retiring in December 2009. He loved the job and the people he saw daily. Joe expanded the original business to include sales to thoroughbred stables, polo, and pleasure horses.
Joe Enjoyed traveling with his family; Ogunquit Maine being a yearly favorite trip.
For many years, Joe was an avid fan of the NY Yankees and NY Giants. He also enjoyed following Syracuse football and basketball.
More recently, Joe enjoyed watching old westerns on TV and spending time with his four grandchildren, whom he adored and doted on.
Joseph is survived by his wife of 53 years, Katherine Aloy; daughters, Annamarie Aloy, Mary Aloy and son-in-law, Gary Quirion; son, Paul Aloy and daughter-in-law, Maria; grandchildren, Liam Whitehead, Katie Whitehead, Joseph and Jacob Aloy; sister, Mary Ose; and nephews and cousins.
Family and friends may call from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm on Wednesday, January 9, 2018 at Compassionate Funeral Care, 402 Maple Ave. (Rte 9 and/or Marion Ave.), Saratoga Springs, NY.
The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to the Greenfield Fire Department and Wilton EMS for all their concern and help over the past year.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Greenfield Fire Department or the American Heart Association.
A private graveside service will be held at the convenience of the family.
