Joan Patricia Hognestad, 91, of Saratoga Springs, NY passed away peacefully on Monday, March 28th at Saratoga Hospital.
Joan was born on Staten Island, NY the daughter of the late Paul and Mary (Wallick) DiPong. She moved with her family to Catskill, NY where she met and married the love of her life, Clifford Hognestad. They had two children and went on to become longtime residents of Colonie, NY.
Joan worked with the phone company for years before retiring from Nynex Corporation, where she made many enduring friendships.
Joan and her “honey” Cliff enjoyed many years on the water boating with family and friends aboard “Our Dream.”
They were active members of both the Ravena Coeyman’s Yacht Club and the Crescent Boat Club.
Joan and Cliff went on to become avid campers, traveling with their fifth wheel camper to Myrtle Beach, S.C. and visiting several country music venues, as well as spending fun-loving times locally where they made lifelong friends and wonderful memories, including “microwave pickles!”
Joan spent most days making a trip (or two!) to McDonald’s with her sidekick “Shadow” so he could have a special treat (or two!) They were the best of friends.
Joan was affectionately nicknamed “Mema” by her beloved grandsons, attending every school award, concert, athletic and career event from the front row. As they grew into adulthood, she loved to ride “shotgun” in their trucks, sharing stories and listening to their latest adventures. Joan enjoyed shopping and would always have an armful of goodies to share, and a pocketful of treats for the “puppy dogs.”
She is survived by her daughter, Pauline Lacovara; her loving and devoted niece Donna Parent (Donald, her “protector”); grandsons, PJ Hognestad, Sean Hognestad (Emily), Mark Trenske, James Trenske; several great-nieces and great grand-children.
Joan was predeceased by her parents; her beloved husband, Clifford C. Hognestad; her son, Paul C. Hognestad (Kathleen) and sister; Marjorie E. Parks (Donald).
Joan was graced with many wonderful neighbors and friends who enriched her life with their kindness, thoughtfulness and their caring nature.
Joan, “Mema,” was truly blessed and knew she was deeply loved by her grandsons PJ and Sean. They held a very special place in her heart.
Joan’s family is deeply grateful to those caregivers and friends who demonstrated their love and devotion through all that they did for her. Thank you for your kindness, compassion and prayers.
In honor of Joan’s wishes, a private family service will be held.
