James Leonard Long, age 71, passed away peacefully on Friday, April 18, 2025, at Albany Medical Center with his loving family by his side.
Born on January 1, 1954, in New Rochelle, NY, he was the son of the late Harry and Alberta Long.
James attended trade school to study culinary arts and went on to work as a truck driver for Excelsior Water Company in Saratoga Springs for many years. He also had a talent for construction and house painting, always lending a skilled hand to various projects. James loved life and found joy in simple pleasures—shooting hoops on the basketball court, casting a line while fishing, and spending time with those he cared about.
He is survived by his soul mate, Dorothy Long, his children, Daryll Long, Londell Vanarnum, James Simmons, and Monique Benefield; sister, Jean Simpkins; brother, David Long; nieces, Adrian Long, Nena Long, Jocelyn Simpkins, and Jeneta Simpkins; nephews, Jason Long, Jerelle Long, and Ezra Long; nine grandsons, two granddaughters, Brianna Vanarnum and Alexis Long; great-nieces, Jayla Simpkins, Mia Long, and Azjona Dozier; and great-nephew, Octavius Duke. James will also be dearly missed by many friends whose lives he touched.
He was predeceased by his parents, Harry and Alberta Long; brothers, Keith Long and Harry Long; and nephews, Jason Long and Jerelle Long.
Family and friends are invited to call from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 27, 2025, at Compassionate Funeral Care, 402 Maple Ave., Saratoga Springs, NY. A funeral service will follow at 6:00 p.m.
