Guy Burwell Moffett Obituary

Guy Burwell Moffett, 90, passed away peacefully on September 11, 2024 surrounded by family and caregivers. He was born on June 11, 1934 to Estelle (Hodges) Moffett and Guy Arthur Moffett in Schenectady, New York. After the untimely death of his first wife, Elena (Parravani) Moffett, and mother of their three young children, he met and married the love of his life, Carmel (Luse) Moffett. They celebrated 58 years of marriage this past August.

Guy graduated from Scotia-Glenville High School in 1952 as senior class president and captain of the football team. After high school he began studies at Amherst University but left to join the US Army during the aftermath of the Korean War and was stationed in San Francisco, CA.  Upon returning to New York, he held numerous positions at Schenectady Savings Bank, studied part-time at Union College, worked part-time for an ambulance service, and played semi-professional football in Schenectady. In 1967, he joined the New York State Department of Labor as an accountant and retired in 1994 as a senior tax auditor responsible for a large region in central NY.

In 1972, Guy moved with his family to a lake-front home in Caroga, NY. He loved the lake life and was happiest when hosting family and friends for weekend summer parties. He also loved the long, cold, snowy winters at Caroga Lake, which invigorated him.  During this time, he was elected to the school board of the Wheelerville Union Free School District and served one year as president of the board. In 1985, Guy moved to Saratoga Springs to care for his ailing mother and made his home in Saratoga County for the rest of his life. He enjoyed traveling, cruising, reading, and rooting for his beloved New York Giants.

During retirement, Guy drove new and used cars back and forth to locations all over northern New York and New England for local car dealerships. He became somewhat of a human GPS system mapping out routes for family and friends before they had smart phones.

Guy was predeceased by his parents, his sister Susan, his sons Guy Charles and Steven Charles. He is survived by his wife Carmel, daughter Sharon (Vince) Arpey, son Gregg Moffett, niece Deborah (Richard) Farrell, nine grandchildren, and nine great grandchildren.

The family wishes to thank the staffs of the Home of the Good Shepherd in Malta, NY and Community Hospice of Saratoga County, whose skill and kindness helped to comfort him during these past several months. A private burial and life celebration will be held at a later date.
