Gary Masten Obituary

Gary Masten, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and brother, passed away peacefully after a long illness on September 11, 2025, just days shy of his 84th birthday. Born on September 14, 1941, Gary lived a full life marked by a devotion to his family, dedication to his work, a passion for his hobbies, and unwavering love for his favorite sports teams.

For 61years Gary shared his life with his wife Sandra (San. Together they raised three children-Denise, Brian, and Jeff and created countless cherished memories. Gary is survived by his wife Sandra, his children Jeffrey Masten and Denise Bardino (husband John Bardino); his grandchildren Alex Schyluk (wife April), Chris Schyljuk, Matt Schyljuk, Katie Masten (fiancé Dom Novello), Ashley Masten, great granddaughter Giada Novello, Carly Bardino, and Michael Bardino. He is also survived by his brother Richard Masten (wife Maureen), nephew Tim Masten (wife Kerrie), and niece Sharon Masten.

Gary was predeceased by his beloved son Brian Masten as well as his parents Harvey and Ruth Masten, whose memories he always carried with him.

As a young man, Gary’s hobbies included playing baseball, reading, stamp collecting, and caring for his chickens. He was also an avid journaler, faithfully recording his days-a habit that reflected his thoughtful nature and appreciation for life’s details.

Gary worked for Montgomery Ward for 40 years, where he was known for his loyalty, hard work, and steady presence.

A lifelong fan of the New York Yankees, and the Dallas Cowboys, Gary never missed a chance to cheer on his teams. He shared his love of sports with his children, coaching Brian and Jeff’s Little League teams and proudly supporting them from the sidelines. He also had a deep appreciation for the simple joys of life-caring for his lawn and flowers, reading a good book, and in later years, attending his grandchildren’s activities, from baseball to softball, to cheer competitions. Gary was also deeply involved with his beloved Malta Methodist Church, where he served faithfully as a trustee for many years and coordinated the monthly Lunch Bunch, which brought people together in fellowship. Above all, Gary treasured time with his family, who were the center of his world.

His family and friends will remember him for his steadfast love, thoughtful nature, and quiet humor he brought to every gathering.
