Frederick Winney Obituary

Frederick Horton Winney, Jr., affectionately known as Fred or Ricky, passed away peacefully at home on May 13, 2025, at the age of 73. Born on September 12, 1951, in Saratoga Springs, NY, Ricky was the son of the late Frederick H. Winney, Sr. and Helen A. Winney.

As a teenager, Ricky moved to Indiana to attend Job Corps, where he completed his education. Known for his larger-than-life personality, Ricky could light up any room with his humor, endless stories, and his signature phrase: “this, that, and the third.” He had a true gift for conversation and never met a stranger.

A passionate sports enthusiast, Ricky always had the latest rundown on basketball and football, complete with his picks and predictions. He found great joy in volunteering at the local food pantry, a reflection of his caring heart and commitment to his community. In his leisure, Ricky loved cooking—often boasting about how he could “get down in the kitchen”—and cherished his time at the Saratoga Race Track.

Ricky’s life was also shaped and inspired by his faith. He was baptized and became a devoted member of the Capital City Seventh-day Adventist Church in Albany, NY.

Ricky is survived by his three daughters, Charise Winney-Stewart, Helena Nelson and Adina Winney; siblings Nazahah “Maxine,” Winney, Adano Daniels, and Melvin Winney and his treasured grandchildren, AhNia Brown, Amani Brown, and Savion Stewart, lovingly referred to as his “grands.” He also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, cousins, and close friends. He was the second eldest of six siblings.

Ricky’s vibrant spirit, warmth, and unmistakable voice will be deeply missed but fondly remembered by all who knew and loved him.

He is predeceased by his eldest brother, Vincent A. Rawlins, and his younger brother, Edward A. Winney.
