Edward John Ayres, 89, born in Elizabeth. NJ died peacefully at his home in Saratoga Springs Thursday, June 30th surrounded by loving family.
Ed graduated from St John’s University and later obtained his M.S.W. from Fordham University both of New York City. Prior to his retirement in 1995 he was the program director in the Department of OASAS, New York State for 30 years.
Known by many names Ed, Dad, Papa, Grandpa he was an active member in the Saratoga Springs community. Ed was an avid reader and member of the local book club at the Church of St. Peter’s. In addition to observing mass daily Ed also enjoyed a day at the casino and watching the races at the Saratoga Race Track.
Ed is Survived by his wife, Doris of 31 years, his sister, Joan Lutz of Spring Lake NJ, his children Ed Ayres, Denyse and Barry Looney, Paul and Sharon Ayres, Dr. John and Karen Kelly, and his grandchildren Abigail Cook, Dara Looney, John Kelly, and Michael Kelly. Ed was also blessed with numerous nieces and nephews.
Ed was an incredible loving man who could have a conversation with anyone about anything. He continued to seek to broaden his understanding of the world and the people in it until the very end, even taking online college courses well into his late 80's. His open mindedness and commitment to seeking differing perspectives on everything in life are an inspiration to all who met and knew him.
Although he moved inland Ed had some salt running through his veins. Ed loved the ocean and being on and around it. He loved going fishing, even with his grandchildren using small plastic kiddie rods, or catching crabs that you couldn't eat just for the fun of catching something. Ed always had at least 3 packs of hotdogs for bait and could never say no to his grandchildren just wanting to stay a little longer, even when the bait was long gone.
Ed's family was of the upmost importance to him. He was an integral part in the lives of his children and grandchildren and could often be found at many events in their lives both small and momentous. It was his desire to be closer to family that brought him back to Saratoga Springs, NY. Ed and Doris previously resided in both Little Egg Harbor, NJ and Stuart, FL. We, as his family, are so grateful his last few years could be spent so close to us.
A mass service will be held at 11 am on Thursday, July 7, 2022, at The Church of Saint Peter, 241 Broadway, Saratoga Springs, NY 12866.
Family and friends may call from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm on Wednesday, July 6, 2022 at Compassionate Funeral Care, 402 Maple Ave. (Rte 9 and/or Marion Ave.), Saratoga Springs, New York.
