Edna Margaret Murphy (nee Pechette), beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on March 12, 2025 at the age of 90 in Saratoga Springs, New York. She was a complex, intelligent, strong, independent, and passionate woman who was fiercely loyal and very generous. For our family, our hearts are especially heavy as she was the last of a very impressive generation.
Early Life & Family:
Born December 20, 1934, she was the daughter of Edna (Lachenmeyer) and Charles Pechette of Williston Park, New York.
She had three cherished siblings who have predeceased her. Edith (Robert) Barnes, Frederick (Linda and Gerry) Pechette, and Charles (Jackie) Pechette. Each of her siblings went on to have large families of their own who played a huge role in her life and her heart.
Edna is also predeceased by her husband, Robert Murphy, whom she married in 1960. Over the course of their 45+ year marriage, they lived in six states, but New York was always in her blood and always her true home.
Friendships were very important to her, and she maintained close ties to friends from every era of her life. Childhood, high school, college, early adulthood, middle age and old age. It was a tight circle that enveloped her and together they shared so many joys and sorrows but each and every one of them was a part of the best years of her life.
She is survived by her four children, Daniel (Sharon) Murphy, Carol (Rick) Tinsley, Patti (Marty) Leonard and Michael (Jean) Murphy, as well as her son-in-law Peter Leonard and four beloved grandchildren, Annie and Jack Murphy and Connor and Morgan Tinsley.
She had a fondness for animals, and is survived by her cat Spooky but her house was a home to a menagerie of animals over her lifetime.
Life & Accomplishments:
Edna was a graduate of Syracuse University where she was in a sorority and was also a majorette.
After graduation, she went to work for CBS in Manhattan.
Once her children were grown, she worked in several administrative roles, including the Epilepsy Foundation.
A passionate golfer for more than 40 years, she enjoyed countless happy hours playing. (Although could be very critical of her game).
She was also an avid baseball fan. First the NY Dodgers and then the NY Mets and could even be found by the radio listening when games weren’t televised. Football was also a favorite and was proud of her days at university when Jim Brown wore the Orange, which carried over to her support of the NY Giants (yes, there were some good years).
Travel was a passion and her destinations were enviable, including many domestic and international areas including Canada, Mexico, many European countries, China and Russia. She also loved to read and was known to love flowers, which forced her to get her hands in the dirt from time to time.
