Dr. Thomas J. Martinez, III, aged 71, passed peacefully away on December 14, 2023, at Saratoga Hospital, surrounded by his loving family.
Tom was born on November 29, 1952, in Saratoga Springs, NY, the beloved son of the late Thomas Martinez, Jr. and the late Dorothy Fitzgerald Martinez.
A native Saratogian, Tom grew up on the historic west side and always enjoyed telling stories of growing up in that special neighborhood. He was a graduate of St. Peters Academy where he excelled at sports, playing both baseball and football. He had a deep passion for music which started in his youth. He studied at Berklee College of Music and was a talented guitar player. Tom played in several local bands throughout the years and had recently begun to play again at several local venues. Tom loved to play basketball and was always up for a pickup game.
Tom had a great love for learning, receiving his bachelor’s degree from Skidmore College, and his master’s degree from Sage Graduate School. He went on to receive his doctorate from Saybrook Graduate School where he was a recipient of the Rollo May Scholarship.
Tom was a dedicated educator teaching at several colleges. An author with several published works as well as a Psychotherapist; he operated his own practice, Dr. Thomas J. Martinez III, PHD, in the Saratoga Springs area for many years prior to his retirement. He enjoyed helping people and continued that through to his passing by being an organ donor.
Tom leaves behind his longtime companion, Darlene Morehouse, his sister, Rose Byrnes (Timothy), Uncle and Aunt Jerry and Shirley Fitzgerald of NH, nephews Ryan Carpenter (Cara) and Aidan Byrnes, Nieces Emily and Isabel Byrnes, many cousins and a multitude of friends who will all miss his friendship, laugh and quick wit.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his sister Donna Martinez Carpenter and nephew Jesse Carpenter.
A mass of Christian burial will be held at 11:00 am on, December 29, 2023, at The Church of St. Peter’s located at 241 Broadway, Saratoga Springs, NY 12866.
A spring graveside service at St. Peter’s Cemetery, 150 West Ave, Saratoga Springs, NY 12866, will be announced at a later date.
Donations can be made in lieu of flowers to the American Diabetes Association.
