Dr. Dominick John "Doc" Riccio passed away on November 13, 2025, in Saratoga Springs, New York. He was born on September 13, 1944, in Brooklyn, New York. Son of Ferdinand and Helen Riccio, husband to Natalie Zacharkiw, father to Alexandra and Mark Riccio, grandfather to Maximillian Riccio Perez.
A lifelong scholar and advocate for ethical practice in mental health, Dr. Riccio’s journey began with a strong foundation in education and faith. He attended Saint Joseph Military Academy and the Catholic Brooklyn Prep before continuing his studies at Fordham University. His academic path was deeply influenced by Jesuit teachings, shaping both his intellectual rigor and his spiritual commitment to humanitas.
Dr. Riccio dedicated his life to the field of psychology, where he became a prominent voice for ethical standards in psychiatric care. He served as President of the International Society for Ethical Psychology & Psychiatry, among many other psychological organizations. His leadership reflected a deep concern for the dignity and well-being of patients within the mental health system.
One of Dr. Riccio’s most significant contributions to psychology was his original thesis asserting that “therapists/psychiatrists who give their patients drugs suffer from negative counter-transference to their patients.” This provocative insight challenged prevailing norms and sparked important conversations about the ethics of psychiatric medication.
Throughout his career, Dr. Riccio remained steadfast in his belief that healing should be rooted in compassion, understanding, and respect for the human spirit. His work left an indelible mark on the field and inspired many to reexamine their approach to psychological care.
May his memory bring comfort to those who knew him and continue to inspire integrity and humanity in the practice of mental health. Everyone in his family loved him deeply.
