On October 12, 2023, Dorothea Marie Ferris passed away peacefully with family by her side at Saratoga Hospital. She was 70 years old.
Dorothea was born in Hudson, New York to Alta Mae Newcomb and Frederick Newcomb in January 1953. While she was from Prattsville, she spent most of her life in Ghent. She later moved to Saratoga County. She was married to Gary Ferris whom she loved unconditionally until her passing. Together they raised 3 children: Jodie, Benjamin, and Jaime.
She received her Associate of Science from Columbia-Greene Community College and continued on to earn her license to be a Registered Nurse from Columbia Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in 1974. While she spent many years providing care to residents in skilled nursing facilities (primarily Pine Haven Nursing and Rehabilitation Center), she transitioned to supporting individuals with developmental disabilities living in the community in her later years (at Occupations Inc and Vanderhyden). Once she retired from being a nurse, she continued to assist a couple whose children wanted to allow them to age in place. Dorothea’s dedication to care of others extended to having a passion for teaching other caregivers and professionals how to help individuals through teaching medication administration and infection control training classes. Dorothea had a strong passion for caring for others and deeply loved her career to the very end of her life.
Dorothea is preceded in death by her mother Alta and her husband Gary. She is survived by her children Jodie (Eric), Benjamin (Nicole), and Jaime (Kyle), and her step-sons Gary (Karen), Lee, Thom (Irene); and her grandchildren Andre (Kaila), Larissa (Benjamin), Owen, Lena, Benjamin, Natalie, Morgan, and Logan, and her step-grandchildren Tiffany, Gary, Jessica (James), Danielle, Olivia; as well as her great grandchildren Molly, Sophia, Sienna, Kainoa, Savannah, and Kianna.
Dorthea loved cruising and traveling to new destinations, particularly when these adventures included her family. She began participating in the events at the Milton Senior Center, moving to volunteering for a variety of events to support local families in need around the holidays. Being together as a family was always a priority for her, as well as maintaining traditions, especially during the holidays, which will continue on for future generations.
Services were held privately with family and friends.
