Don Johnston Obituary

Unbeknownst to most, the world became a better place when on April 11, 1934, when Don O. Johnston came into this world.

Don was the son of Elmer and Vivian Johnston of 168 Lake St., Rouses Point, NY. A kind and gentle soul, Don led an exemplary life for himself, his family and his community, having served on the Village Board for a number of years.

Don served in the USAF from 1953-1957.  Upon receiving an honorable discharge, he attended Canton School of Technology graduating with a degree in Electrical Technology.  He then began a thirty-nine-year career at Sheridan Iron Works, Harris Graphics and Kimpex, USA until retirement in 1999.

Don Married Mary Margaret Coopy in 1969.  He was a loving family man and a model husband and dad – except that he never learned to cook!!

To this day his son, Dan, often remarks on how much he learned under the wing and advice from his dad.

Don was truly a “Jack of all trades” and was always ready to give a helping hand.  In fact, his wife, without his knowledge, often offered his time and talent so that he earned the nickname – “Don’ll do it!”

One of Don’s proudest accomplishments was a two-year garage project where he completely restored a 1969 427 Corvette down to the last screw and wire.  It was and still is a beauty, as it remains in the family protected and well preserved.

Don was meticulous in everything he did.  His wise advice was “pay attention to detail.”  Nary a dandelion nor weed dared to plant itself on his lawn!  His cars were always shiny and spotless.  His eat off the floor garage could not have been more organized.  Every item owned its place, and it was mandatory that that item always be retuned to its home – or else!

Don’s undying love for Lake Champlain never weakened even in his last months.  His memory bank was dwindling but embedded forever were the many years of the good times – boating, fishing, water skiing, skating and snowmobiling on that beautiful lake.  Family and friends delighted in hearing and sharing with him his many happy stories.  A proud and grateful dad, he nurtured and shared with his children his love of the lake and his childhood home until they left the nest to pursue their own dreams.

Unfortunately, and sadly, Don became a victim of Alzheimer’s and his fragile body could no longer bear the damage of the debilitating disease.  He passed away peacefully on July 27, 2025.

Don is survived by his wife of 56 years, Mary Margaret, Ballston Lake, NY; son, Dan (Maryann), Rome, NY; daughter, Aminee (Josh) Spiegel, Saratoga Springs, NY; grandchildren, Jameson, Olivia and Molly Spiegel, Saratoga Springs, NY; sister, Barbara Holland, NH; brother in law Bill (MaryAnn) Coopy, Remsen, NY and several nieces and nephews.

There will be no calling hours.  Interment will be announced and will take place at the convenience of the family.

If donations in his memory are considered, they may be made to: NY State Alzheimer’s Association, 4 Pine West Plaza #405, Albany, NY 12005 or to the charity of choice.
