Craig Tunwall Obituary

Craig Allen Tunwall was born February 12, 1955 in Iowa. He passed away September 13, 2025. His parents were John and Anne (Webster) Tunwall. He spent his early years in Cedar Rapids and Bettendorf, Iowa.  In his youth and early adulthood, he participated in many sports including football, basketball, track, wrestling, and baseball. After moving with his family to Germany, he graduated from Mannheim American High School; the ceremony was held in the beautiful Dome Cathedral in Worms, Germany.  Moving back to Iowa, he received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Iowa in 1976.

He worked for Johnson Controls in Milwaukee, WI for several years and then moved back to Iowa City to earn his PhD in Business/Human Resources.  It was during that time he met his wife of 36 years, Carol Carnevale.  They were both teaching professors and spent a few years in Alabama while Craig taught at the University of Alabama-Huntsville.  A final move brought them to New York where he worked at Empire State University until his retirement in 2009.  After retirement, he taught online for other universities including Troy University.

During his free time his favorite activity was reading.  He could devour a very thick book in just a couple of days. He volunteered at the Saratoga Springs library spending his time surrounded by the books he loved.  He especially enjoyed following the Iowa Hawkeye sports closely, rooting for his alma mater.   He also enjoyed traveling overseas, cooking at home, and dining at local restaurants.

He is survived by his loving wife, Carol; sister Gail (Bruce) Bindewald (Iowa); brother Warren (Deborah) Tunwall (Iowa); sisters-in-law Mary Lu Carnevale (Bob Metzler) (Maryland); Joyce Carnevale (Iowa); brother-in-law Michael (Deborah) Carnevale (Colorado), and many nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to Saratoga Springs Public Library, Mohawk Hudson Humane Society, or a charity of your choice.

A memorial service may be held at a future date.
