Carolyn Kerby Obituary

Carole went to her heavenly home on January 11, 2024 surrounded by her family in Saratoga Springs, NY.

She was born on April 30, 1933 in Hampton, VA to John Samuel Powell and India Anna Andleton Powell.

Carole graduated from Hampton High School and then completed her nursing education and training in 1954 at Riverside Hospital earning her registered nurse’s (RN) license. That same year she married her high school boyfriend and the love of her life, Alfred “Al” Evison Kerby.

In addition to Carole’s career in nursing at major hospitals including George Washington University Hospital in Washington, DC and MedStar Montgomery Medical Center in Olney, MD, Carole supported Al’s long government contracting career by establishing warm and loving homes for the two of them and their four children in several US states as well as Paris, France and Oslo, Norway. Carole and Al enjoyed spending time with their family and friends, welcoming all to their home dubbed “Summer Song” located on the Chickahominy River. Summer vacations at “The River” were an integral part of childhood for two generations.

Carole was preceded in death by her husband Al Kerby and her sister Jean Darnell. Carole is survived by her sister Audrey Lou Powell Morrison and her children Kathy Kerby and husband Ben Littauer, Lisa Kerby and husband Barry Langevin, Karen Kerby and husband Jeff Webster, and Kevan Kerby and wife Patsy Bishop; her grandchildren Ariana Littauer, Ross Littauer and wife Hollie Matlin, Jesse Cohen, David Cohen, Ali Cohen and partner Levi Sanders, Jessica Gawrys and husband Brant, Emily Lomonaco and husband Sal; and two great-grandsons Noah Littauer and Evison Gawrys.

Burial services will be private, with a memorial gathering at a later date.

Memorial donations may be made to one of Carole’s favorite charities, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Pl., Memphis, TN 38105-3678 or to the Home of the Good Shepherd, 400 Church Street, Saratoga Springs, New York 12866, where Carole received kind and loving care in her last few years.
