Betty Larmon (born Betty Jean Davis…yes, she has Betty Davis eyes) completed her journey on earth to be with the Lord and Pop on January 6, 2026. Many families and friends took this passage before her, and she felt left out. She decided it was time to join their party.
Everyone in her family had nicknames. Many never knew their real names. Welcome to country living! She was known as “Mop”. She even had a license plate MOP POP.
Mop spent 52 years of her life at Saratoga Hospital as a Practical Nurse. Her career was helping others. She sacrificed many Thanksgivings and Christmases to be away from her own family to help others. Over the years her hours were spent in Maternity, the Lab, ER and Floor D3. She also worked in the gift shop as a volunteer. Her retirement was based on her decision to take care of Pop after his heart was tired of working.
Mop was one strong woman. They don’t make them like that any longer. When she spoke, people listened. In a good way. She mowed her own lawn (3 acres) on Pop’s John Dear tractor until July 2024.
Mop loved animals. ALL Animals! Domestic and wild. Birds, cats, dogs, rabbits, goats and squirrels. She was dedicated to feeding her feral cats. She partnered with local charities and veterinary offices to capture the cats and have them spayed/neutered. And continued to feed them morning and night through every season in the northeast. She had this squirrel that would come into the house (God only knows how this animal got into the house) to drink out of the dog bowl (there are pictures to prove this!)
Mop loved the Saratoga Thoroughbred Racetrack. She knew the jockeys and trainers. Boy, could she bet. Then there were the trips to the casinos with her sister Topsy. And scratch offs. She loved them all.
Mop was a devoted Methodist. She spent many hours in the back right pew of the United Methodist Church in Schuylerville, NY (SUMC). She also enjoyed working in The Way in downtown Schuylerville, which is the donation store sponsored by the SUMC. Her wish is to have her clothes donated to The Way. She has a lot of nice clothes! We suggest you go shopping!
In the 1970’s Mop and Pop owned Larmon’s Newsroom and Variety Store and Stewart’s Ice Cream on Broad Street across from the laundromat (important note to locals). For those reading this and do not know Stewart’s Ice Cream…. Google this company. It is HUGE…. really HUGE. Mop was Ben and Jerry’s before they were even on the radar! The kids after school would head to the ice cream shop and she would take a scoop of this and a scoop of that and create a new ice cream creation. They were all delicious! Dr. Nash the local dentist loved the ice cream store. He filled lots of cavities.
Mop was a true historian. She knew everything about Schuylerville and Bacon Hill. Where everyone lived, who they are married to/divorced from, children and grandchildren names, where people are buried in the graveyard, etc. etc. etc. She would give Miss Cudahy a run for her money. (important to locals also).
Mop made the Larmon house the place to go to after sporting events. The Larmon house was always filled with kids from school. She made it a safe place for the students of Schuylerville to have fun and for parents to know they were safe and in good hands. Whether it be after a basketball, football, field hockey, softball game or some other event, everyone went to The Larmon’s for popcorn. She always served it in a red bowl that was a gift at Mop and Pops wedding. To this date that bowl is 72 years old and still exists.
Most importantly, Mop was a great mother. She always made sure we had dinner on the table. If we had some sporting event, dinner would be warm in the oven. She made our beds and did laundry, helped with our homework and attended every event we were at. She loved her grandchildren to the Universe and beyond. And was blessed with a great grand-daughter she cherished.
As most obituaries state….” She is predeceased by….”. Forget that! Listed by their nicknames: Mop will be joining Pop (David Larmon), her parents Hoppy (Delbert Davis) and Tilly (Lydia Davis), her sister Topsy (Doris Billings) and her brothers Buck (Donald Davis), Lippy (Kenneth Davis), Pete (Ray Dean Davis) and Bernie (Bernard Davis) and nephew Davie (David Billings).
As for those who will continue her legacy, or at least try to do their best, her daughters Susie (Susan Larmon-Fitzgerald and her husband Jimmy (James Fitzgerald) and Bobby (Barbara Lapitsky) and her husband Steve Lapitsky, her grandchildren Todd(Mariah), Brian(Dario), Kathryn(Randale), Shawn, and Steven Ruhle(Trudy), one great- granddaughter Emma Steepe, several nieces and nephews…Peaches, Cobby, Bear, Cindy, Karen, Ronnie and Kenny.
At Mop’s request, there will be no calling hours or church service. She will be joined with Pop at the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery located at 200 Duell Road Schuylerville, NY 12871 on May 4, 2026, at 11am.
Please visit them at Section CA5, Row D, Site 9. Bring a lunch, sit on the bench and enjoy the peace and God’s angels around you.
If desired, please donate to the Schuylerville United Methodist Church, 51 Church Street, Schuylerville, NY 12871 (SUMC), The Way located at 17 Ferry St., Schuylerville, NY 12871 or any animal rescue of your choice.
Rest in peace mom.
