Peter Edward Fisher

December 8, 1920 ~ December 4, 2017 (age 96) 96 Years Old

Peter Edward “Ed” Fisher, Sr., of 10 Montgomery Street returned to his Heavenly Father on Monday, December 4, 2017 after complications of pneumonia at Glens Falls Hospital.

He was born on December 8, 1920 in Sturgeon, Prince Edward Island, Canada, he was the son of John Thomas and Emma (Kearney) Fisher.

Ed was a 1939 graduate of Fort Edward High School. In April of 1942, he enlisted in the US Marine Corps serving as a radio operator and sharpshooter in the Southwest and Central Pacific areas.  After three close calls in a week, his fellow soldiers proudly nicknamed him “Lucky Pete”. He was a member of the Fort Edward American Legion.

Honorably discharged from World War II, he returned home and became employed at Scott Paper Company in Fort Edward. He retired in 1985 after 40 years of faithful and dedicated employment.

On September 1, 1946, he married Rose “Betty” McHenry at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church in Middle Granville, NY.  Newly married, they settled in Fort Edward and have lived at 10 Montgomery Street for 69 years where they raised their 10 sons.

Along with his wife Betty, Ed’ life was centered around his family, faith, and community. He was a devoted communicant of St. Joseph’s Church in Fort Edward, serving as Eucharistic Minister, trustee, catechist and for 70 years serving the parish, he was instrumental in the hospitality ministry and an acolyte for the funeral services. He was a lifelong member of the Knights of Columbus.

For decades, they prepared and conducted prayer services at the Fort Hudson Nursing Home every Tuesday morning for the residents.

Betty & Ed were one of the first lay ministers to visit and distribute Holy Communion to patients at the Glens Falls Hospital every week for over 30 years.  Every Sunday, they would visit and distribute Communion to numerous home- bound people who are unable to attend mass.

They also volunteered at the local food pantry at the Fort Edward Baptist Church by preparing groceries for those in need.

All these spiritual activities were a reflection of Ed’s love for Jesus Christ and the working and inspiration of the Holy Spirit.

Over the years, Betty and Ed enjoyed attending family sporting events, they even received an award for their devotion and attendance at these events.  Ed was a very social person, he loved to be with people and talk to people and were active members of the Hudson Falls Senior Citizens.

Ed was a championship caliber horseshoe player who competed in the State Finals. His favorite pastime was tending to his garden.

Besides his parents, he is pre-deceased by his wife, Betty (September 19, 2016); brothers Louis, Joseph, Adrian, and John Patrick; sisters Mary Pidgeon, Helena Montgomery and Rita McHenry; brother- in- laws Daniel, David, Kevin, Martin, Francis, and Jack McHenry; sister-in-law’s Madeline, Margaret, Kathryn, Evelyn, Florence, Genevieve, Helen and MaryAnn (Ann), and a daughter in law Susan Fisher.
