John Garrett Van Horn II

John Garrett Van Horn II, age 61, has silently closed the door of life on Friday, June 1, 2018 at home surrounded by his loving family. 

He was born on December 5, 1956 in Seaside, CA, the son of Elizabeth Huizenga Van Horn and the late John G. Van Horn. 

John was an Engineer for NYS for many years. He could always be seen designing, building and creating new projects and hobbies with amazing diversity and passion.  He enjoyed traveling, especially to any beach.  John loved playing in Big Bug Bog, his twenty-two acres near Fish Creek.     

John was the kind of man that no one will ever forget. He was such an important part of so many lives, so much joy and goodness he brought into their lives as husband, son, uncle, brother-in-law, grand uncle, friend or neighbor.  There were no strangers in John's world for very long. He embraced everyone as a new friend, and freely gave his time to help anyone he could.

John is survived by his loving wife Sherry Van Horn of 16 years; mother, Elizabeth Van Horn; sisters, Elizabeth Jones (Michael), Melanie Balestra (Michael); nieces, Sara Menei (Sam), Brooke Jones; nephews, Michael & Mark Balestra; grand-niece, Madeleine Menei; brother-in-law Dennis Abbink; sister-in-law Dixie Belmont; his dog, Mako J. Sharx; cat, Smoky T. Bear; and many friends who will miss him dearly.  

He is preceded in death by his father, John G. Van Horn, and his father and mother-in-law, Irvin and Viola Abbink.

Calling hours will be held from 3:00 to 5:00 pm on Saturday, June 9th, followed directly by a funeral service at 5:00 pm to celebrate his life, love, and friendship.  These will take place at Compassionate Funeral Care, 402 Maple Ave, Saratoga Springs, New York.
