Donald E. Dowen Sr.

GANSEVOORT- Donald E. Dowen Sr., of Adirondack Circle, Gansevoort, passed away on March 29th, 2018 peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family. He was 80 years old.

Donald was born on September 22nd, 1937 in Saratoga Springs, NY; he was the son of the late Joseph and Effie B. Dowen.

Donald was a lifelong resident of Saratoga Springs. He served in the United States Army 82nd Airborne Division. He was a firefighter for the city of Saratoga Springs from 1967 to 1987. Donald was a longtime member of Local 343 and was a member in good standing with the Saratoga Springs Retired Firefighters Association.

Donald’s greatest joy was spending time with his family. He also enjoyed taking leisurely drives in the country and through the Saratoga Battlefield, watching old westerns, doing crosswords, and playing golf.

He leaves behind his loving wife of 56 years, Sherry Dowen of Gansevoort; a son, Donald Dowen Jr. and wife Tammy of Corinth; two daughters, Deborah Dowen of Gansevoort and Renee Brower and husband James of Gansevoort; eight grandchildren, Amanda Bergin (Edward), Courtney Lloyd, Brittany Lloyd, Kevin Lloyd Jr., Codie Dowen, Dustyn Dowen, Donald Dowen III, and Isaiah Dowen; two great-grandchildren, Sweeney and Edward Bergin; a brother, Robert Dowen of Altamont, and a sister Penelope Myers of Greenfield; several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was also predeceased by his brothers James, Joseph, Elijah, Eugene, and Harold Dowen; and sisters, Agnes, Dorothy, Helen, Evelyn, Mary, and Eleanor.

Family and friends may call from 10:00-11:00 am on Monday, April 9, 2018 at Compassionate Funeral Care, 402 Maple Ave. (Rte 9 and/or Marion Ave.), Saratoga Springs, NY.  A Fireman’s service will be at 11:00 am following the visitation at the funeral home.

Interment with military honors will be at 1:00 pm at Gerald B. H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, 200 Duell Road, Schuylerville, NY.

There will be a reception for further fellowship following the interment at the Knights of Columbus, 50 Pine Rd, Saratoga Springs, NY 12866
