Betty Jane Fisher

April 25, 1937 ~ July 21, 2017 (age 80) 80 Years Old

Betty Jane (Comar) Fisher, age 80, passed away on Friday, July 21, 2017 at Saratoga Springs Hospital surrounded by her loving family.

Known affectionately to her friends and family as “BJ”, she was born on April 25, 1937 in Hudson Falls, NY, the ninth of 13 children, to the late Frederick Comar and Leanora Wheeler.

BJ was a registered nurse with a pediatric specialty who served many years at various hospitals and most notably, 26 years at Division Street Elementary School.  During her tenure as school nurse, she was at the forefront of educating and treating childhood obesity and diabetes.  She routinely helped kids with AIDS and even saved the lives of at least two children by performing the Heimlich maneuver.  Her dedication to the well being of students and teachers was immeasurable.

In addition to nursing, BJ raised her family and was busy with a variety of creative hobbies and community service throughout her lifetime.  She was an active member of the United Methodist Church in Saratoga Springs, in its Ruth Circle, reception committees, and rummage sales.  Being a lifelong knitter, as part of the Ruth Circle, she knitted tens of prayer shawls, scarves, sweaters and hats for those in need.

Never idle, to her last breath, BJ was planning and organizing her final days and those thereafter.  She is beloved for keeping everyone around her on track, on time, and front and center.

BJ is survived by her loving husband William of 57 years; siblings Patricia Pratt (John), Lee Comar (Sheila), and Peter Comar (Sandy); sons, Garth Fisher and Aaron Fisher (Barbra); daughters, Temple Genung (Daniel), Rebecca Fisher (Ibon), daughter-in-law Christine Fisher; 9 grandchildren: Seth, Christopher (Lisa), Prahlad, Micah, Megan, Dillon (Myah), Tahlyn (Cassie), and Naia; and 2 great-grandchildren: Indigo and McKinley; numerous nieces and nephews and many friends who will miss her dearly.

She is preceded in death by her parents and her son Todd Fisher, siblings Marie Latham (Robert), Frederick Comar (Betty), Alice Mary Mingo (Joe), Jean Morrill (Arnold), Leslie Comar (Dorothy), Ellen Congdon (Al), Donald Comar, Harvey Comar (Judy), and Dale Comar.

The family would like to express heartfelt thanks to the dedicated nurses and staff of the intensive care unit at Saratoga Springs Hospital, and especially to Dr. DelGiacco and Dr. Phillips.

A funeral service with reception to follow will be held at 12 noon on Thursday, July 27th at the Saratoga Springs United Methodist Church, 175 5th Ave, Saratoga Springs, New York, 12866.
