Sylvia M. Bartlett

Sylvia M. Bartlett, 94, passed away peacefully on December 17, 2023 in Saratoga Springs, New York surrounded by her family. She was born on January 20, 1929 in East Poultney, Vermont, the daughter of Henry Marcy and Anna Panoushek Marcy Ellis. She graduated from Poultney High School in 1948 and from Rutland Business College the following year. She married Roland L. Bartlett in 1948. She worked as a bookkeeper at Howe’s Coffee Shop in Rutland, Vermont before retiring from working outside the home to devote her time to raising a family of four children in Proctor, Vermont.

Sylvia was an avid gardener all her life, growing many vegetables that she canned for her family to eat during the winter. She tended to a garden until she was 90, maintaining three garden plots at her senior living residence, the Maples, in Rutland. She was also a talented seamstress and sewed many of her children’s clothes and snowsuits as they grew up.

Sylvia and Roland were members of the Marble Valley Gallivanters Chapter of the Good Sam Club and enjoyed many years of camping in Vermont and Florida. They also travelled all over the country visiting several states and many relatives in their RV. She and Roland also spent many years snowmobiling, boating and even riding mopeds. Sylvia loved music and loved to dance. During her retirement years she taught line dancing at her winter residence, the Salt Springs Retirement Village in Florida, where she had quite a following, and at the Maples in Vermont. She continued to teach line dancing until she was 90. Sylvia also took part in almost all the games, activities, parties and field trips offered at both senior living residences in Vermont and Florida.

The week before she died Sylvia attended the Christmas party at her assisted living home in Malta, New York. There was food, music and dancing and she had a great time, even dancing the limbo in her wheelchair! Her family is grateful she had the chance to dance one last dance.

Sylvia is survived by her children, Jorja Bartlett Darby and her husband, Paul, of Pittsford, VT; Janel M. Martinez of Queensbury, NY; Terry R. Bartlett and his wife, Elizabeth Marshall, of Boise, ID; and Joleen J. Lutz and her husband, Scott, of Franklin, MA; her sister, Darlene Dikeman and her husband, George, of Albany, NY; her grandchildren, Jordan and Nisa Martinez; Emily and Thomas Bartlett; Corey, Morgan and Brandon Lutz; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Roland; a brother, Henry Marcy of Whitehall, NY; and a sister, Elizabeth Dimick of Castleton, VT.

The family will hold a Celebration of Life for Sylvia at the Rutland Country Club on May 11, 2024 from 1:00-4:00pm.
