Stephen Schiltz, 61, passed away on May 4, 2017 at home surrounded by his family after a courageous battle with cancer.

He was born on March 19, 1956 to Betty Spadaro and Sylvester Schiltz.

Steve grew up in Altamont and graduated from Guilderland High School.  He was a member of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Glen Falls where he taught Religious Education and played open mic at the UU Cafe.

Steve was an Army Veteran of 18 years serving during Desert Storm.  He was a member of the Boyd Hilton Post 7062 Veterans of Foreign Wars located in Altamont.  After retiring from the army, he worked at various jobs.  He especially liked working at the S&K where he enjoyed meeting and talking to the customers.

Steve was always artistic.  As an adult he enjoyed drawing, especially sports players.  An avid Yankee Fan his drawings included many Yankee players, including many from the early years.  He was a musician.   He loved to play the guitar and sing.  Most recently he would host and play at The Spot in Glens Falls on Friday nights until his illness made him stop.  In 2015, he published his first book ‘Just Me and the Ball’ and was working on the sequel at the time of his death.

Steve is survived by his son Stephen who lives in Kansas, his parents Betty Spadaro of Saratoga Springs and Sylvester (Beth) of Altamont; siblings Donna Schadow, Chuck, Jim (Suzanne) and Doug; nieces Jessica (Brian) Altman, Kristen (Carl) Hatt, and Devon Schiltz; nephew Andy Schiltz; grandnephew Levi Altman; step-siblings Jeff (Jackie) Gregory and Jennifer Cary; a dear friend, Karen Schiltz; many cousins, aunts, uncles and his cat Stewie. 

He is preceded in death by his brother Joe and step-father Joe Spadaro.

Special thanks to the VA Oncology Department, VA Clinic in Glens Falls and Highpeaks Hospice in Glens Falls.

A memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family at a later date.  Burial will be at the East Clarendon Cemetery in Vermont.
