Daniel Mabb Obituary

Daniel (“Dan”/”Danny”/”Uncle Dan”) D. Mabb passed away at home, peacefully in his sleep, the morning of Friday, February 16, 2018, after a short, courageous battle with two types of aggressive thyroid cancer – neuroendocrine and poorly differentiated.

Dan was born in Saratoga Springs on November 6, 1961 and was the son of Clarence (“Duane”) Mabb and Elizabeth (Kelley) Mabb.  Dan was predeceased by his father, grandfathers, maternal grandmother, great-aunt and great-uncle, as well as his mother-in-law and father-in-law.

Dan worked at Thomas Oil as a teen, and then at his parents’ auto repair shop, D&B Garage, for many years before beginning a career at Schenectady Chemicals (now SI Group); Dan retired in 2006.  Dan was also a very proud Hospice volunteer, who had completed training in 2016.

Dan was a kind and loving man, with a very strong faith, who would give the shirt off his back to those less fortunate; he truly felt connected to the underdogs in life and would do what he felt he had to do to help those in need.  Dan also had the gift of gab and a marvelously witty sense of humor.  Even though Dan had many struggles beginning at a young age, having been sexually abused by members of clergy while serving as an altar boy on the east side of the city of horses (who his soul had forgiven prior to his journey Home to be with the Lord), a long and painful struggle with alcohol abuse (so proud was he and those who loved him that he had been sober for more than five years; he truly cherished his time with treasured friends in those meeting rooms), as well as his struggle with severe depression (he/we couldn’t have done it without you, Susan Decker, NPP, Dr. Richard Osborne, Dr. Roland Phillips, and Dr. Brian Izzo), Dan always found something to smile about, feel grateful for, or just simply blessed.  Dan truly enjoyed nothing more than traveling with his wife, Dolores, who he had known since they were teens, and snuggling with his precious pug, “Penny,” who will miss her daddy dearly.  Dan loved the ocean and traveling to Maine, and he and Dolores had been on many interesting adventures through the years, including trips to Jamaica, the Bahamas, and MANY trips to Walt Disney World.

Dan is survived by his wife and soulmate of 36 years, Dolores (Kovaric) Mabb, his mother, Elizabeth (Kelley) Mabb of Ballston Spa, NY, grandmother, Geraldine (Boyce) Mabb (age 103!) of Ballston Spa, NY, his brother Todd Mabb and sister-in-law Abbey Mabb of Indialantic, FL, his sister and brother-in-law, Kelley (Mabb) and William (“Will”) Taylor of Ballston Spa, NY, his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Dean (Sr.) and Shirleen Kreplin of South Bethlehem, NY, his brother-in-law, Mark Kreplin, of Scotia, NY, as well as an aunt, uncle, and several nieces and nephews.  We would also like to acknowledge Cousin Butch and close friends, Al and Bonnie Anderson, whose love and support will always be remembered.

Our heartfelt thanks to Dan’s amazing surgeon at Mass General, Dr. Sareh Parangi…you are truly awe-inspiring; to all of the gifted doctors, med students, nurses, housing coordinators, and assistants at Mass General that worked with Dan…there are no words to express the phenomenal care he received while in Boston.  To Dan’s medical and support team at home…Dr. John Mongan, Dr. Alex Frank, Dr. Jessie Block-Galarza, Dr. Harry Lindman, Dr. Brad Elliott, Dr. George Boyar, Dr. James Hansen, Jennifer Baldwin, LMSW, OSW-C, as well as Dolores’s friends and colleagues at Four Winds Saratoga…our lives were touched so deeply by your caring and compassion, and there aren’t enough ways to express the gratefulness that is so heartfelt.  Our sincere thanks to Rolland Hoag and the wonderful staff at Compassionate Funeral Care (Saratoga Springs), for helping make this difficult time a bit easier.
